The island receives many famous visitors during its summer months, with many people referring to the island as "Hollywood East." Not so long ago uninhabited except for an occasional farm or fishing village, it now provides the setting for many a summer home. They make the town a museum-piece community, a seaport village preserved from the early 19th century. Additionally you will visit the Town of Oak Bluffs which is a resort town on the northeast shore of the island. It was originally incorporated in 1880 as Cottage City. Oak Bluffs is also the home of the Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country. Its horses were hand-carved in New York City in 1876. You will also see Vineyard Haven (also known as Tisbury) and West Tisbury which have the characteristics people associate with a typical "New England village," with its white church, general store, post office, old mill, farms, and ponds.
